Spring vacation

Lenka`s parents came over from Czech republic. I got 5 days off, so I decided to go to a place I have never been before and somewhere where the weather is warmer.
I chose Miami Beach in Florida. My vacation was to last from the 16th of april till the 20th of april.

When I woke up on Monday the 16th, it was snowing. I had to call the Philadelphia international airport to see if my flight wasn’t canceled. Fortunately it wasn’t, it was just one hour late. I was lucky because all the flights were cancelled that day.

The flight was alright, except for the guy who was sitting next to me. He was mentally disabled and he was trying to talk to me all way there (3 hours in all). I should be ok with that because I will be working with mentally challenged people but I was really tired and wasn’t’ in the mood for a long conversation. He kept asking me question after question. But it was fun though.

I arrived at the Miami airport and I couldn’t find my luggage. I always have problems with that. After one hour I finally found it. I then took a shuttle to South Beach. I was staying in the Claremont hotel. I don’t know if “hotel” is the right word for it because plaster was falling down from walls and there were holes in the ground, but it was just a sleeping accommodation so it was ok. I went to the beach after I arrived, but I was the only one in the water because it was already 7pm. The water wasn’t cold; it felt about 80 degrees or more. What a place! On the first night I went sleep at 9pm. I didn’t care about any night life in Miami because I was dead tired.

I slept badly because the main street was under my window. In the morning I was ready to go to beach. I really enjoy being on the beach. It is relaxing: there is no screaming and no stressful people – it’s just me and the beach (and hundreds other people of course).

I got burnt from the sun although I was using suncream, but it wasn’t enough. I burnt my whole body. I decided to go back to my room and thought I would come back out at night, because I thought I would probably not sleep. After the beach I went for dinner and then went out. I went to a club called Mango`s which is a famous club in South beach. Well, my opinion is that it is a gay club, but I spent 2 hours there talking to people, had some drinks and then went back to the hotel. It was about 2 miles from my hotel so it made me tired. The next few days were the same except for going to to the same club again. I also hit some another bars which were alright.

On Thursday I had to wake up at 6am because I wanted go for one-day trip to Key West.
I called Miami Nice Tours to see if they could pick me up in my hotel at 7am. They came
30 minutes late, but the most important fact was that they came at all. We picked up the other people and we were ready to go to Key West. The journey takes 4 hours - we could
spend 4 hours on the islands and then 4 hours to return. It was a long way, but it was beautiful.
We crossed 42 bridges and 32 islands. I was staring at the turquoise, greens, and blues of the Atlantic Ocean on the East, and the Gulf of Mexico on the west for miles. The highway ran from US1, the only route leading to Key West. It was the most beautiful place I have ever been.

We came to Key West at noon, but we had to be back in tour bus at 4pm. I wanted to go
snorkeling, but I would be back at 4:15 and my bus would be on its way back. So I went parasailing which was a lot of fun too. It was nice to see all that beauty from the air. I
enjoyed it a lot. They let my legs go under the water, which was good because it was hot that day. Well, it was good until the guy who was driving a boat started to yell: “Shark!
There is a shark behind you!!!” I don’t wish that feeling on anyone. I started to say a prayer, and pray goodbye to everyone I know, and then he started to laugh. I knew he was just kidding, but that feeling wasn`t good at all.

After parasailing I went to a reastaurant for some sea food. It was good. After that, I still
had one hour to kill so I went to Irish pub. I had some Guniness and then
had to run to catch my bus back. The way back seemed to be longer but it was fun to hear
how others were enjoying their trip. I came to my hotel at 9pm and went for a
walk on beach. It was my last night in Miami so I wanted stay up as long as I could. I met
one man on the beach who was 50 years old. We started to talk about our trips and we were talking for like 40 minutes. It was nice to talk to someone. Than he asked me where I was from. When I said Czech republic he started to laugh very loud. He told me he is from Czech too, so we could start to speak in Czech. It is funny talk to someone in English, a citizen of the same country I am from - but who could guess something like this could happen? This world is really small.

We went for dinner together because it is better to go with someone than alone. Then he
went to his hotel and I stayed for little bit longer sitting in restaurant and watching other
people. Then I was tired so I went sleep.

My last day in Miami. Isn’t it sad? Yes it was sad and I did not want to go back, but I had
to. I packed my things and left my luggage in the hotel for two hours or so and went to say Goodbye to the beach. Then I took some more pictures of that beautiful place and then the shuttle was back waiting for me in front of the hotel.

The flight back was better, but no one was sitting next to me so I could relax. We had some problems with landing in Philly. We had to wait for another plane, so the pilot circled above Philly`s airport for 20 minutes. Then it was ok.

I found my luggage amazingly fast and I ran to catch the train to Fort Washington, where Vaclav should be waiting for me. I was waiting just 2 minutes for the train, and Vaclav surprised me. He was there waiting on time also so it was great. I came home and there were our friends Daniela and Bohous. They made me a big dinner (they thought I didn’t eat all 5 days there). We were talking till Midnight and then I went to sleep. I was back in my bed – it felt good. I would have stayed in Miami for another week though - or longer. Florida is a paradise.

skiing in Blue Mountain

Today was a beautiful day and the weather was great. My boss’s family and I decided to go skiing in Blue Mountain. Our plan was to wake up at 7 and leave at 8:30 am. Well, we woke up at 7 am, but we left at 9:30. We were one hour late in leaving the house which was not too bad.

We got to the ski area at 11am. My boss’s younger daughter Peta is just two years old so she wasn’t able to ski, so Vaclav told us that he will watch her, because he was also feeling lazy today and didn’t wish to ski. So Lenka (the mom of the family), and Kaja (her daughter who is 4) and I went for our skies and we set out for the slopes. Once we were on the mountain, Lenka held Kaja because she was afraid to ski.

I left them behind and I had two hours of free skiing wherever I wished. “Where should I start?” I thought. To start I began with an easier hill, and then when I was sure that I really remembered how to ski I went for the harder ones. The snow was perfect – it wasn’t melting or icy – it was just right. I chose the hardest hill and I spent an hour there. It was really great. I met one lonely snowboardist on the chairlift. He asked me if I could go downhill with him. I thought why not, because I think it is more fun with someone than alone, and it was true. It was so much fun! He let me borrow his snowboard for a while. I used to snowboard, but it was long time ago so it took me a while to get the skills back to be able to go down the hill on it. I finally did it and I was so happy that I still remembered it how to snowboard I was beside myself. Then it was time to say bye to him and go back to find Lenka and Kaja.

I found them very easily - they were on the easiest hill. When I got back to them, I promised that I would take Kaja with me and Lenka can go skiing somewhere else. Lenka left and I tried to teach Kaja how to ski. I tried to instruct her the same way my dad did when I was 3 years old. She listened to me carefully and it took just a few minutes before she could turn herself and she went all the way down the hill down. I didn’t even have to hold her. I was so happy that she did it! Then we skiied with her another 2 hours and she started to like it very much. We had great time together. It was so much fun, especially, when we were on the chairlift and she started to yell, that she needs to go pee and "right now!!!!" By this time it was already 5pm so we decided to find Vaclav and Peta and tell them that we were ready to go home. We couldn’t find them, but we found our friend Scott (boyfriend of our Slovak friend Martina). While we were talking, Vaclav found us and told me that he would be waiting in the car. We called Lenka and we explained that we were ready to go home. It was a great day, with tons of shining sun (in fact, I got my face burnt). We were tired on our way home, but it was all worth it.

Just saying

Sitting in my room. Lonely. What a great Saturday! My car is under the snow and I can’t see it. Well, what will I do today? Good question...it is St.Patrick`s Day today, hooray!

I know, I am not Irish, but where is it written that just the Irish can drink today? Alright, I’ll put on my Irish t-shirt on (thanks to Paul I have one:-)). I go to the kitchen to see what drink I can have, but when i came to kitchen, Vaclav (my boss) tells me that I need to babysit for them tonight. Ok, then that means I can’t drink.

I am thinking about taking my Irish shirt off, but if i can’t drink i will wear the shirt anyway. So Vaclav leaves and I am left playing with the kids. Later it was time to go to bed - for the childen, of course. So after putting them to bed I had one beer. I turned the tv on and i saw how people are celebrating today. It was good to see it. Everybody was just drunk. Well, if that is the way how the Irish are, then they are really crazy! Everybody had on green t-shirts on which was written : "Kiss me, I am Irish", or "Kiss me, I am drunk". I am thinking about making a t-shirt that will say: "I am not irish, but kiss me anyway".

Then i decided i had enough of watching drunk people and i had another beer. Then Vaclav and Lenka came from dinner and they came with Kveta (Czech girl, who was their au pair two years before and who is still studying in the United States) with her boyfriend. We talked a lot and drank a lot. Then I slept on the sofa in the living room. Good night and happy St.Patrick`s Day to all!

International girl - aneb co vse o tobe obleceni (ne)rekne

I hardly could wait for 6:30pm – that is the time when I am done with my job on Tuesdays. I was in the gym for 4 minutes, but it was difficult to find a parking spot. Cars were everywhere - not one free spot - so I had to go around and around in circles for 10 minutes. I am coming into the gym and I am trying to remember where I put my membership card last time. I had to tell that guy in front desk, that I forgot it. For verification purposes he wanted to see my ID. I do not like that guy at all. He is always looking at me strangely. I told him that I forgot my card. A terrible smile spread across his face and I did not know whether to return the smile or run away. I decided to stay; but then I thought I better should leave. He started to talk to me.

He asked me if I was from Canada. I thought in my mind: “What? Do I have written on my face that I am from Canada?” Then I figured out why he asked me: he was staring on my jacket where the word "Canada" was written. I told him that i wasnt from Canada, while still waiting for my temporary ID card. And then he asked me another stupid question. "You have to be from Germany." I replied I wasnt and I wondered why he thought I was german. Then I saw how he was staring on my legs. On my pants was written “German dream”. I had not realized that was written there. It was written with small letters. Then I found out that I better hurry, because I was already late for spinning class. So I asked him if he can give me my temporary ID but he still had one more question for me. He asked me where am I was from. Should I tell him that I'm from the USA? Ha. No I am not liar. I told him I am from Czech republic. He probably wouldnt know where it is. He said something like, "oh... hmm... interesting." The point of this story is not that interesting, but do you know what is really funny? I started to laugh there so much, I just couldn’t stop. I recalled that I was wearing socks on which were written “Czech team”. I was such an international girl today.

My spinning class went well - it was 1 hour hard work, but I love it so much. Then I still had some more energy, so I went swimming another hour. Swimming is a very relaxing sport, it makes me feel good. Then my friend came by, so we worked out some more and then I was dead tired. I am off to bed. Dobrou noc!

Trip to Philly

I decided, that I should make some trip, because I was really bored on Saturday. My plan was wake up at 8 and catch the train at 9:53 from Roslyn. Well, I woke up at 8, but I forgot that time is changing today, so actually it was already 9:00. I got up really fast, took a shower, drink glass of water and I rushed to the station.

Train was late about 10 minutes. (I could sleep ten minutes longer.) It was full of people who were going to Philly to see Flower show. I was sitting with 3 more people on seat for 3 people. Btw no one of them was slimmer than me. The way was terrible but I survived. The weather in Philadelphia was great, sun was shining and it wasn’t cold at all. Such a wonderful day. I went to Franklin institute, and then I was just walking around. I met a lot of people, who were wearing clothes with Irish colors.

Well, I was the only one who had not anything with their colors on. I did not know, why streets are full of these people, St. Patrick’s Day should be in 1 week, right? Maybe they started celebrating a bit earlier or who knows what was it.

It doesn’t take a long time and I was wearing Irish t-shirt too. I met group of people wearing green t-shirts and shouting: “ Irish, Irish, Irish.” When I was passing by them, they asked me, if I could take a picture of them. I took picture and they started to talk to me. One of them gave me a t-shirt, so finally I wasn’t the only one who hadn’t Irish t-shirt. I had to say them bye, because I wanted to go to the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall. Then I went to some shops and then was time to go home. See you next time, Philly.
